SPACE

Using space in a room is all about the distance between and around furniture and objects and their proportions within the room. It is important to find a great balance between negative and positive space. Positive space is where the furniture in your bathroom is positioned. Negative space refers to the gaps in between your furniture and objects. So finding the right balance between positive and negative space will make your room feel well laid out. Too much negative space can make a room feel under‑furnished, and too much positive on the other hand can make your space crowded. Of course, the beauty of a bathroom design is also always in the eye of the beholder. Nevertheless, space is something to keep in mind when creating your bathroom.

LINE

Within your bathroom space, lines can profoundly influence the overall feel. Lines refer to the structural features of the room and the fittings. Lines can be horizontal, vertical and dynamic. Horizontal lines bring a sense of stability and can widen the feel of the room. eg. the bathroom vanity. Vertical lines give a feeling of freedom and make a room seem taller, such as doors, windows, tile layouts, elongated mirrors. This leads the eye upwards and visually heightens the room. Dynamic lines inject a room with energy. They can be diagonal, zigzag and curved. A round basin or one with curved edges is a good example of a dynamic line. When choosing your bathroom fittings like the basin, vanity, bath tub or shower – have a think about the kinds of different lines they throw into the space.

SPACE

A form includes the shape of the bathroom space itself or the objects in it. Shapes can be geometric (like your vanity) or curvy (mirror or basin). The key here is, once again, is to balance out the geometric and curved shapes. A space with only geometric forms often lacks character and can feel a little clinical. It can easily be balanced out by adding some shapes – be it a curvy basin, round mirror, curved tapware.

LIGHT

Make sure your room has a nice balance of natural and artificial lighting. Light can also be filtered with window coverings or added with hanging mirror. Add a nice variety of accent lightning and make sure you have lights placed in different areas of the room. Consider dimmer switches to allow a change of atmosphere to be achieved. When designing your bathroom, it would be beneficial to see how much natural light can flood the space without the use of additional lighting. Texture can for example be added by fabric (rugs, towels), materials like concrete and tiles, and further in flower arrangements and styling details. Don’t be afraid to bring a little of the lounge room into the bathroom.

PATTERN

Just like texture, pattern is a great way to make your design more interesting. It is a simple way to add more life into a room. Pattern might come from a rug, wallpaper, tiles or artwork. Whether the style of the pattern is geometric, floral, abstract or any other design – it should always be in harmony with the overall scheme of your bathroom design. Have fun with matching your patterns in subtle ways. These subtle connections are what give well designed an a mystical edge.
